Rolex Daytona 116523

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116523 is the two-tone Daytona Rolex made from 2000 to 2016: a 40 mm steel case with an 18k yellow gold bezel, crown and pushers, a steel and gold bracelet, and calibre 4130, the first Daytona movement made entirely by Rolex. Below are the 116523s we have for sale and those we have sold, with prices, dials, specifications and a buying checklist after the grid. Watches with “PVD/DLC” in the title were coated black after they left Rolex.

Rolex 116523 Price

At Watch My Diamonds, Rolex Daytona 116523 watches range from $19,760 to $32,448 across 6 priced listings.

As of September 2026, a 116523 with a standard white, black or champagne dial generally sells on the secondary market from the high teens to the low $20,000s. Mother-of-pearl, diamond-set and Arabic-numeral dials sit above that. The 116523 is discontinued, so there is no current retail price: what a watch is worth depends on the dial, the condition of the case, bezel and bracelet, whether the box and papers are present, and the year, since later watches have the engraved rehaut and the blue Parachrom hairspring described below. The customized black PVD/DLC watches in this collection are priced on the work done to them as well as on the watch, so they do not follow the market for factory 116523s. Watches marked “Price on request” are in stock: contact us for a current figure. The price chart at the bottom of this page tracks the average listing price for this reference on our site over the last twelve months, including pieces that have since sold.

Rolex 116523 Dials

The case, bezel, bracelet and movement are the same on every 116523. The dial is what sets one apart from another, both in looks and in price.
  • White, black and champagne. The standard dials and the most common on the market. They set the base price for the reference.
  • Mother-of-pearl. White or black mother-of-pearl, usually with diamond hour markers. Because the dial is cut from shell, the pattern is different on every watch.
  • Diamond-set dials. Diamond hour markers on black, champagne and other colors. They should be the diamonds Rolex set at the factory, matching the reference on the papers.
  • Arabic numerals. The least common 116523s, including a blue dial with Arabic numerals and the exotic-style dials that sellers call “Paul Newman” after the Daytonas of the 1960s.

How the 116523 Changed During Production

Rolex built the 116523 for sixteen years and updated it along the way, so two watches with the same reference can differ in the details. The year on the warranty card tells you which version you are looking at.
When What changed
2000 Introduced with calibre 4130 and an uncolored Parachrom hairspring
Around 2005 Blue Parachrom hairspring, for better stability over time
Around 2007–2008 Rehaut (the inner ring around the dial) engraved “ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX”, with the serial number at 6 o’clock; earlier watches have a plain rehaut
2015 Superlative Chronometer standard of −2/+2 seconds a day after casing, with Rolex’s five-year guarantee
2016 Replaced by the 116503
None of these changes makes an early watch less genuine. A plain rehaut on a 2003 watch is correct; the same rehaut on a watch whose papers say 2012 is a reason to ask questions.

Customized Black PVD/DLC 116523s

Several watches in this collection are 116523s that were coated in black PVD or DLC after they left Rolex, often with a replacement bezel, dial or strap. Rolex has never made a PVD or DLC Daytona, so these are aftermarket customizations: the case, movement and reference number are Rolex’s, the black finish is not, and a customized watch is not covered by Rolex’s guarantee. Every one we list says “PVD/DLC” in its title. For more fully black Rolex watches, see our Rolex black PVD/DLC collection.

What to Check Before Buying a 116523

  • The year and the details that go with it. The rehaut and the hairspring should match the date on the papers, as in the table above.
  • The bezel. 18k gold is softer than steel. Look for dents on the edge of the bezel and for tachymeter numerals that have been worn or polished shallow.
  • The bracelet. An older Oyster bracelet can stretch between the links, and the gold center links show wear before the steel ones. Check that the clasp closes firmly.
  • The dial. Mother-of-pearl, diamond and Arabic-numeral dials are worth more, so make sure the dial is the one Rolex fitted, ideally confirmed by the papers or a Rolex service record.
  • Service history. Every 116523 is now at least ten years old. A recent service by Rolex or a qualified watchmaker belongs in the price.
  • Coatings and modifications. If a watch has been coated or fitted with aftermarket parts, the listing should say so.
Every watch we sell is inspected and authenticated in house before it ships. If you want to buy over time, see our watch financing options.

Rolex 116523 FAQs

What years was the Rolex 116523 made?

From 2000 to 2016. It replaced the 16523 and was replaced by the 116503 in 2016. Dealers sold their remaining stock after the change, so some watches have warranty cards dated after 2016.

Is the Rolex 116523 discontinued?

Yes. The 116503 replaced it in 2016, and the 126503 replaced the 116503 in 2023. All of them kept an 18k yellow gold bezel: the ceramic Cerachrom bezel that came to the steel Daytona with the 116500LN in 2016 has never been used on the two-tone model.

Does the Rolex 116523 have a date?

No. No Rolex Daytona has a date or a Cyclops lens. The three sub-dials show the chronograph’s 30-minute and 12-hour counters and the running seconds.

What movement is in the Rolex 116523?

Calibre 4130, a self-winding chronograph with about 72 hours of power reserve. Launched in 2000, it was the first Daytona movement made entirely by Rolex; the earlier 16523 used a movement based on the Zenith El Primero.

What is the difference between the 116523 and the 116503?

Both are 40 mm, steel and yellow gold, and use calibre 4130. The 116503 has bolder tachymeter numerals with triangular markers, and every 116503 has the engraved rehaut and the blue Parachrom hairspring. On the 116523 those details depend on the year.

How much is a Rolex 116523 worth?

As of September 2026, a 116523 with a standard dial generally sells from the high teens to the low $20,000s, and rare dials sell for more. The condition, the dial and a full set with box and papers make the biggest difference. The price range above covers the watches we have now.
