A bit about the history of the brand

Leon Breitling

Breitling history started in 1884 when Leon Breitling established his workshop in the Jura Mountains, in Switzerland. Breitling is considered a luxury brand for its durability, craftsmanship, and exquisite design. The legacy of the brand was passed down bloodline to Leon’s son Gaston Breitling who took over and oriented the brand towards aviation by creating various chronographs that were needed by pilots. In 1915, Gaston created one of the first swist-worn chronographs with a separate pusher which was one of the major innovations that led pilots to be able to note time more accurately, which was crucial in first flights.

The 1970s were an unlucky period for Breitling as they could not escape the “Quartz Crisis”, when inexpensive quartz watches from Japan disrupted the watch industries of Switzerland, driving demand away from mechanical timepieces. At the end of 1979, Breitling was bought by Enst Schenider, who was an admirer of the values of Breitling, soon after purchasing the brand he started renewal of the company. Under Schneider Breitling continued to rebuild its signature brand of specialized and highly accurate tool watches. The brand remained in service to pilots and other professionals. During the 1990s, Schenider expanded global awareness of Breitling and started positioning the brand as a luxury watch.  Because of its Swiss craftsmanship, and aviation heritage, the brand retains its status among the respected players in the luxury watch industry.
