The L suffix indicates it is a low carbon version of 316 stainless steel with less than or equal to 0.03% carbon content. Because of the low carbon content, 316L is softer and more ductile than other grades of stainless steel, making it easier to machine. What is 904L Stainless Steel 

904L is a super austenitic stainless steel grade developed for even more aggressive environments than 316L can withstand. It is also known as UNS N08904 and is considered a high alloy grade due to its expensive composition. Chromium, nickel, and molybdenum contents are lowered to 19-23%, 23-28%, and 4-5%, respectively. There is also 1-2% copper added to the composition. This stainless steel was originally developed for better-than-grade 316 corrosion resistance to dilute sulfuric acid.
