What Is the Rolex Jubilee Dial?

A Jubilee dial is a Rolex dial whose whole surface is covered with the word ROLEX, broken into blocky letters and tiled edge to edge. On the classic versions the pattern is the same color as the dial, so it reads as a texture rather than a print: it catches the light when the watch turns and fades when you look at it straight on. That subtlety is why the same watch can look plain in one photo and busy in the next. Rolex made it in black, white, silver, champagne, blue, pink, chocolate and cream, with hour markers ranging from simple batons to Roman and Arabic numerals and full diamond sets. It was most common on the Datejust and Lady-Datejust, and it also appeared on the Day-Date and some Cellini models.

Why Is It Called the “Computer Dial”?

“Computer dial” is a collectors’ nickname, not a Rolex name. The usual explanation is the look: the chunky, grid-like letters resemble the pixel lettering of early computer screens and printouts. You will see “Rolex computer dial”, “Jubilee dial” and “logo dial” used for the same thing by dealers and on the forums, and in our listings. The third name, “Anniversary dial”, comes from its history. Rolex dates the Jubilee motif to the end of the 1970s, and it is widely tied to 1985, when Rolex marked its 80th anniversary and the Datejust its 40th. The word “Jubilee” itself echoes the Jubilee bracelet, which Rolex designed for the launch of the Datejust in 1945.

From the Datejust to the 2026 Oyster Perpetual

Through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s the Jubilee dial ran through several generations of the Datejust: the five-digit references such as the 16233, the six-digit 116xxx and 178xxx models, and the 126xxx generation that arrived in 2018. In the early 2020s it left the Datejust catalogue, as Rolex moved to newer motif dials such as the palm and fluted designs introduced in 2021. Since then, every Datejust with a Jubilee dial has to be bought on the secondary market. In 2026 the motif came back in a very different form. At Watches and Wonders, Rolex introduced the Oyster Perpetual 36 ref. 126000-0016 with a multicolored lacquer Jubilee-motif dial. Rolex applies the ten colors one after another rather than all at once, and every letter has to line up exactly. The rest of the watch is a standard Oyster Perpetual 36: a 36 mm Oystersteel case with a domed bezel, an Oyster bracelet and the calibre 3230 with about 70 hours of power reserve. It is the watch that put the Jubilee motif back in the Rolex catalogue.

Jubilee Dial vs Jubilee Bracelet

The two share a name and often appear on the same watch, but they are different parts. The Jubilee dial is the lettered pattern on the face. The Jubilee bracelet is the five-piece-link metal bracelet that has been paired with the Datejust since 1945. A Jubilee dial can come on an Oyster or President bracelet, or on a leather strap, and most Datejusts on a Jubilee bracelet do not have a Jubilee dial. When a listing says “Datejust Jubilee”, it usually means the bracelet. This collection is about the dial.

What to Check Before Buying a Jubilee Dial Rolex

• The pattern. On an original dial the letters are crisp, evenly spaced and run cleanly to the edge. A soft, patchy or misaligned pattern can mean a refinished or aftermarket dial.
• Diamond markers. Rolex set diamonds on many Jubilee dials at the factory, but aftermarket diamonds are also common on older Datejusts. Ask whether the dial is factory and check that the papers match.
• The reference. On six-digit and newer watches, the full reference on the papers (for example 126233-0033) identifies the dial. Make sure it matches the dial in the watch.
• Service history. A dial can be swapped during a service. Service papers help confirm the dial is the one the watch left the factory with.
