AP 15300 References and Dial Variants

Every 15300 has the same 39 mm case, 9.4 mm thick and water resistant to 50 m, with a sapphire case back that shows the calibre 3120 and its 22k gold rotor. What changes is the metal, the dial and the bracelet or strap. On the steel 15300ST, the ending of the reference number also tells you which dial a watch left the factory with.

The .99 is the Sogo & Seibu edition, made for the Japanese department store group: a steel 15300ST with a high-polished platinum bezel in place of the usual brushed steel one. The rose gold 15300OR was made on an alligator strap rather than the integrated bracelet.

AP 15300 vs 15202 “Jumbo” vs 15400

The 15300 is often confused with the two Royal Oaks either side of it. The 15202 shares the 39 mm diameter but is a different watch, and the 15400 kept the 15300’s movement in a bigger case.

Against the Jumbo, the 15300 gives you a central seconds hand and a longer power reserve, at the cost of 1.3 mm of thickness. Even at the same 39 mm, the 15300 wears slightly smaller than the Jumbo because of the proportions of its case and bezel.

What to Check Before Buying a Pre-Owned AP 15300

• The papers. Match the reference and serial number on the case back to the warranty papers. On the steel 15300ST the suffix also names the original dial: .01 white, .02 blue and .03 black.
• The 12 o’clock marker. A 15300 dial uses the large applied AP logo as its 12 o’clock marker. A double baton at 12 with a small logo beneath it is a 15400 dial.
• The finishing. The Royal Oak alternates brushed surfaces with polished bevels. Heavy polishing softens those edges and rounds the bezel, and it cannot be undone.
• The bracelet. Check the integrated bracelet for stretch between the links and ask whether the extra links are included, since they are expensive to replace.
• The clasp on a 15300OR. The alligator strap is a consumable, but the 18k rose gold AP folding clasp is not. Make sure it is the original.
• Service history. Ask when the calibre 3120 was last serviced and by whom, and whether AP service papers came with it.
