Audemars Piguet 15202 Jumbo
The Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin reference 15202 is the model that stayed closest to the watch Gérald Genta drew in 1972. Same 39 mm octagonal case, same eight hexagonal screws, same integrated bracelet tapering to the clasp — and, unusually for a modern luxury sports watch, the same ultra-thin proportions, at 8.1 mm from caseback to sapphire. Audemars Piguet retired it in 2022, which closed the reference permanently. Explore our curated collection of Audemars Piguet 15202 for sale. Show more
Why the 15202 Is Called the “Jumbo”
The nickname is a leftover from 1972. At 39 mm the original Royal Oak reference 5402 was enormous for a steel watch of its day, when a dress watch typically measured 34 to 36 mm, and the trade started calling it the Jumbo. The name stuck to the bloodline rather than the size, so it followed the reference through every successor even as the rest of the watch world grew past it. Today a 39 mm Royal Oak is the small one in the catalogue, and the Jumbo name means thinness and lineage, not bulk.
What makes it extra-thin is the movement. The calibre 2121 is a self-winding movement built on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 architecture from the 1960s — a full-rotor automatic that runs on a peripheral ball-bearing system rather than a central one, which is what lets the whole watch finish at 8.1 mm. It carries a date at three o’clock and roughly 40 hours of running time, and it is the reason the case wears flatter than almost anything else with an integrated bracelet.

The suffix after the reference number tells you what the watch is made of, and it moves the price far more than anything else about the piece.
- 15202ST — stainless steel, the one most people picture. Blue Petite Tapisserie was the signature dial, with silver-toned, grey and black versions alongside it.
- 15202BA — 18k yellow gold, case and bracelet. Substantially heavier on the wrist and produced in far smaller numbers than the steel.
- 15202IP — titanium case and bracelet with a platinum bezel, carrying the smoked blue gradient dial. A late addition, and one of the last Jumbos to leave the factory.
Discontinued in 2022
Audemars Piguet ended the 15202 at the Royal Oak’s fiftieth anniversary and replaced it with the reference 16202, which keeps the 39 mm case and the extra-thin silhouette but drops in an entirely new in-house movement, the calibre 7121, with a larger date aperture and a redesigned rotor. The 16202 and the other anniversary pieces sit in our AP 50th Anniversary collection.
That hand-off matters for anyone shopping the 15202 now. It is a closed reference: no more are being made, the calibre 2121 is out of production, and every example on the market has already been worn or stored by someone. Condition, originality and paperwork carry more weight here than on a watch you can still order.

Audemars Piguet 15202 Price
At Watch My Diamonds, the most recent AP 15202 Royal Oak listing was priced at $94,999.
The figure above is generated from the priced listings on this page and includes pieces that have already sold, because a confirmed recent sale is a better guide to the market than an asking price that has not moved in months. Metal drives the spread more than condition does: a steel 15202ST and an 18k yellow gold 15202BA are the same watch mechanically and trade in different brackets entirely. Because the reference is discontinued and our stock of it turns over quickly, this page is often thin — if the configuration you want is not listed, we can source it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick is the Audemars Piguet 15202?
8.1 mm, measured from the caseback to the top of the sapphire crystal. That figure is the whole point of the reference — it is what “Extra-Thin” refers to, and it is why the 15202 slides under a shirt cuff in a way that almost no other integrated-bracelet sports watch manages.
Why is the Royal Oak 15202 called the “Jumbo”?
Because the 1972 original was. At 39 mm the first Royal Oak was outsized for a steel watch of its era, and the nickname attached itself to the bloodline rather than to the measurement. It has been carried by every direct successor since, including the 15202, even though 39 mm is now one of the smaller cases Audemars Piguet makes.
When was the 15202 discontinued?
In 2022, at the Royal Oak’s fiftieth anniversary. Production of the calibre 2121 ended with it, so the reference is closed and the supply can only shrink.
What replaced the Audemars Piguet 15202?
The reference 16202. It keeps the 39 mm extra-thin case and the Petite Tapisserie dial but runs the new in-house calibre 7121, with a larger date window and a redesigned rotor.
What is the difference between the 15202 and the 15400?
Size and movement. The 15202 is the 39 mm extra-thin Jumbo on the calibre 2121; the 15400 is the 41 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding, a thicker watch on a different movement. They look closely related in photographs and wear very differently.
Does the 15202 come in gold?
Yes. Alongside the steel 15202ST there is an 18k yellow gold 15202BA, a rose gold variant, and the late titanium-and-platinum 15202IP with the smoked blue gradient dial. The precious-metal versions were made in much smaller numbers.
