Rolex Submariner No Date References

Five references carry the modern no-date line, and you will see them described as no-date, non-date, dateless or simply “without date” depending on who is selling. They are the same watch. Knowing which reference you are looking at matters more than the year on the papers, because the case, the crystal and the bezel all changed along the way.

Submariner 5513 (1962 to the late 1980s)

The longest production run of any Rolex Submariner, and the last one built the old way: a 40 mm case with drilled lug holes, an acrylic crystal, an aluminum bezel insert and 200 m of water resistance. The 5513 ran the non-chronometer calibre 1520, which is why it sat below the 5512 when new and why it is now the most accessible route into a vintage Sub. Submariner 14060 and 14060M (1990 to 2012)

The 14060 brought the no-date into the modern era in 1990 with a sapphire crystal, 300 m of water resistance and the calibre 3000, still on an aluminum bezel and a two-line dial. In 1999 it became the 14060M with the calibre 3130, and around 2007 Rolex added chronometer certification, which is how you get the four-line dial collectors use to place the later examples. This generation is the sweet spot for anyone who wants a no-date that can be worn hard without vintage anxiety.

Submariner 114060 (2012 to 2020)

The first ceramic no-date. The 114060 held the 40 mm diameter but moved to a Cerachrom bezel insert that will not fade, a broader case with heavier crown guards, Chromalight lume and the Glidelock clasp that adjusts the bracelet without tools. It is the most-traded no-date reference on the secondary market and the one most buyers are actually searching for. See the Rolex 114060 collection.

Submariner 124060 (2020 to present)

The current model. Rolex widened the case to 41 mm but slimmed the lugs and the flanks, so the 124060 wears closer to a 114060 than the numbers suggest. Inside is the calibre 3230 with a 70-hour power reserve, up from roughly two days on the outgoing movement. Same Cerachrom bezel, same Glidelock, better engine. See the Rolex 124060 collection.

40 mm or 41 mm?

The step from the 114060 to the 124060 is one millimetre on paper and less than that on the wrist. Rolex used the extra diameter to redraw the lugs, which had grown thick on the previous generation, so the newer watch reads as more restrained despite measuring larger. If your wrist is under about 6.5 inches, try both before deciding, because the 40 mm references are no longer the automatic answer. Filter this collection by 40 mm or 41 mm.

Price is driven by reference first and condition second. A 5513 with an original matte dial and a sharp, unpolished case can outrun a modern 114060, while a tired example of the same reference sits well below it. Among the ceramic references the spread is narrower and more predictable: the 124060 carries a premium over the 114060 for the newer calibre, and both trade close to one another when box and papers are present. Coated and customised examples sit outside those bands entirely. A factory-standard steel Submariner and a PVD/DLC-coated one are not the same market, and the aftermarket finish is reflected in the asking price.

What to Check Before You Buy

• Case sharpness. Over-polishing rounds the lug edges and erases the bevel. On vintage references that costs more value than a scratched dial.
• Bezel insert. Aluminum inserts on the 5513 and 14060 fade and ghost. That patina is desirable when it is original and a problem when it is a replacement.
• Lume consistency. The dial plots and the hands should have aged together. A mismatch usually means the hands were swapped.
• Crystal type. Acrylic on the 5513, sapphire from the 14060 onward. A sapphire crystal on a 5513 is a service replacement.
• Bracelet stretch. Older folded and hollow-link bracelets stretch. Check the end links for play against the case.
• Papers and service history. Not essential on vintage, materially valuable on the 114060 and 124060.
