Rolex Fluted Bezel
The fluted bezel is Rolex’s signature detail: a ring of fine, evenly cut ridges that catches light from every angle. Rolex introduced it on the Oyster in 1926, when the fluting allowed the bezel to be screwed tightly onto the case, and today makes it only in 18 kt gold or platinum. Browse our Rolex fluted bezel watches for sale: the Datejust and Lady-Datejust, the Day-Date, the Sky-Dweller, the Perpetual 1908 and the Land-Dweller, plus discontinued Turn-O-Graph and vintage Datejust references, all authenticated in New York.

These are the Rolex collections that carry a fluted bezel:
| Model | Case size | Bezel |
|---|---|---|

| Lady-Datejust | 28 mm; 26 mm on older references | Fixed, fluted, in white, yellow or Everose gold |
| Day-Date | 36 mm, 40 mm | Fixed, fluted, in the same 18 kt gold or platinum as the case |
| Sky-Dweller | 42 mm | Fluted, bidirectional rotatable Ring Command bezel: turning it selects the function the crown sets |
| Perpetual 1908 | 39 mm | Domed and fluted: the upper part is domed, the lower part finely fluted |
| Land-Dweller | 36 mm, 40 mm | Fixed, fluted |
| Turn-O-Graph, discontinued | 36 mm | Fluted, rotatable |
Earlier references follow the same pattern, among them the Datejust 16013, 16233, 16234, 116233, 116234 and the Lady-Datejust 69173.
Fluted vs. Smooth Bezel
The Datejust is offered with either bezel. The smooth, domed bezel is made in Oystersteel on the all-steel versions, while the fluted bezel is always gold, so a fluted Datejust is a Rolesor watch, pairing Oystersteel with 18 kt gold, or a solid gold one. On White Rolesor models the white gold bezel reads almost like steel at a glance, and those references retail above their smooth steel counterparts.
Rolex Fluted Bezel Prices
At Watch My Diamonds, fluted-bezel Rolex watches range from $5,059 to $231,000 across 513 priced listings.
That range includes watches that have already sold. Watches listed without a price are available on request.
Buying a Pre-Owned Fluted Bezel Rolex
Gold is softer than Oystersteel, so the ridges of a fluted bezel are where wear shows first. On a pre-owned watch, look for flutes that are crisp and evenly spaced all the way round: heavy polishing rounds their edges. Each listing states whether the watch is unworn or pre-owned, and every watch is authenticated in New York.
Rolex Fluted Bezel FAQ
What is a fluted bezel on a Rolex?
It is the ring around the crystal, cut with fine, regularly spaced ridges. Its facets reflect light, which is why the bezel stands out even from a distance, and Rolex describes it as its distinctive signature feature.
Why did Rolex make the bezel fluted?
For waterproofness. On the Oyster of 1926, the fluting allowed the bezel to be screwed tightly onto the case, sealing the watch. Since 1953 Rolex has fixed the bezel by friction-fitting instead, and the fluting has stayed as a decorative signature.
Is the fluted bezel on a Rolex real gold?
Yes. Rolex makes its fluted bezels only in 18 kt gold or platinum, according to rolex.com. That includes White Rolesor models: a Datejust 126334, for example, has an Oystersteel case and an 18 kt white gold bezel.
Which Rolex models have a fluted bezel?
Today the Datejust, Lady-Datejust, Day-Date, Sky-Dweller, Perpetual 1908 and Land-Dweller. Discontinued models with one include the Datejust Turn-O-Graph and the Oyster Perpetual Date 115234.
Should I choose a fluted or a smooth bezel?
It comes down to taste. The fluted bezel is dressier and catches more light; the smooth bezel is quieter and, on the steel Datejust, keeps the watch all steel. Because the fluted version is always gold, it costs more than the all-steel smooth version of the same model.
