What Counts as a Black Dial at Patek Philippe?
Patek Philippe uses several different blacks, and its catalog names each one. The Calatrava 5227G-010 has a lacquered black dial. The Golden Ellipse 5738R-001 and the perpetual calendar chronograph 5270/1R-001 are sunburst ebony black. The Grandmaster Chime and the 5961R-010 annual calendar chronograph are ebony black opaline. The Grande Sonnerie 6301P-001 has a Grand Feu black enamel dial, and the Golden Ellipse 5738/51G-001 is black champlevé enamel, hand-engraved with white gold arabesques. The steel sports watches are a special case: for the Aquanaut 5167A-001, the Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A-001 and the Nautilus 5726A-001, Patek’s technical sheet describes a sunburst charcoal gray dial with a black-gradient rim, while elsewhere on the Aquanaut pages Patek calls the same dial sunburst black.
Black Dial Patek Philippe by Collection
Aquanaut
The Aquanaut is the most accessible way into a black dial Patek. The 5167A-001 has been in the catalog since 2007: a 40.8 mm steel case, 8.1 mm thick, the embossed Aquanaut dial with luminescent white gold numerals, and a matching black composite strap. Current production runs on the self-winding calibre 26-330 S C. The Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A-001, introduced in 2018, measures 42.2 mm and houses the flyback calibre CH 28-520 C, with its chronograph indications in orange; it is delivered with two straps, one black and one orange. The Aquanaut Luce 5267/200A-001 is the women’s model: 38.8 mm in steel, a quartz calibre E23-250 S C, a black varnished dial and a bezel set with 48 diamonds totaling 1.17 carats.
Calatrava
The Calatrava 6007G is Patek’s most contemporary take on its dress watch: a 40 mm polished white gold case, 9.17 mm thick, and an ebony black dial with a “carbon” motif embossed at the center and luminescent white gold numerals. Its black calfskin strap repeats the carbon pattern. The three versions share the dial and the self-winding calibre 26-330 S C and differ in their accent color, carried on the strap stitching and lining: yellow on the 6007G-001, red on the 6007G-010 and sky blue on the 6007G-011. The Calatrava 5227G-010, now discontinued, is the classic counterpart: a 39 mm white gold case with a lacquered black dial, faceted trapeze-style hour markers, faceted dauphine hands and a dust cover with an invisible hinge over the sapphire caseback.
Golden Ellipse
The Golden Ellipse 5738R-001 pairs a rose gold case, 34.5 x 39.5 mm and only 5.9 mm thick, with a sunburst ebony black dial on an 18K gold dial plate and rose gold baton hour markers. It is the thinnest watch in the collection, thanks to the ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 with its off-center 22K gold minirotor. The 5738/1R-001, added in 2024, is the same watch on a rose gold chain-style bracelet. The 5738/51G-001 in white gold comes from Patek’s Rare Handcrafts line: its dial is black champlevé enamel, hand-engraved with white gold arabesques and volutes.
Nautilus
The black dial Nautilus models have their own page. Here you will find the steel Nautilus 5726A-001, an annual calendar with moon phases and a 24-hour indication on the self-winding calibre 26-330 S QA LU 24H, in a 40.5 mm case delivered on alligator leather with an additional black composite strap. Older black dial Nautilus pieces, such as the rose gold 5980/1R-001 chronograph and the 33 mm quartz 3900/1, appear here as well.
Complications and Grand Complications
The black dial extends to Patek’s most complicated watches. The Grand Complications 5270/1R-001 is a perpetual calendar chronograph in rose gold, 41 mm, with a sunburst ebony black dial and the manually wound calibre CH 29-535 PS Q, on a rose gold bracelet; Patek has since discontinued it. The 5961R-010 combines a flyback chronograph with an annual calendar in a 40.5 mm rose gold case, its ebony black opaline dial set with baguette diamond hour markers. The platinum Grande Sonnerie 6301P-001, 44.8 mm, strikes the hours and quarters in passing and repeats the time on demand, behind a Grand Feu black enamel dial with white gold Breguet numerals. At the top of the catalog sit three white gold Haute Joaillerie versions of the Grandmaster Chime, references 6300/400G-001, 6300/401G-001 as well as 6300/403G-001: Patek’s most complicated wristwatch, with 20 complications, a double-sided reversible case 49.4 mm across and ebony black opaline dials on both faces. The Celestial models in rose gold, the 6102R-001 and the 6104R-001 with its baguette diamond bezel, show the night sky of the northern hemisphere on three superimposed sapphire discs.
Buying a Black Dial Patek Philippe at Watch My Diamonds
Every watch we sell is covered by our authenticity guarantee. Each listing on this page states whether the watch is unworn or pre-owned, and a watch shown as “Price on request” is in stock. Dust under the crystal and marks on the hands show more clearly on a black dial than on a light one, so on any pre-owned piece it is worth asking for close-up photos of the dial. The full range, in every dial color, is on our Patek Philippe page.
Patek Philippe Black Dial FAQ
Which Patek Philippe models have a black dial?
Black dials appear across the catalog. In current production they include the Aquanaut 5167A-001, the Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A-001 and the Aquanaut Luce 5267/200A-001; the Calatrava 6007G; the Golden Ellipse in rose gold, on a strap or a bracelet, and in white gold with black enamel; the Nautilus 5726A-001; the 5961R-010 annual calendar chronograph; the Grande Sonnerie 6301P-001; and the Grandmaster Chime. Discontinued black dial references include the Calatrava 5227G-010 and the perpetual calendar chronograph 5270/1R-001.
Is the Aquanaut dial black or gray?
Both descriptions come from Patek Philippe. The technical sheet for the Aquanaut 5167A-001 describes a sunburst charcoal gray dial with a black-gradient rim, and the same page also calls it a sunburst black dial with the embossed Aquanaut pattern. The gradient darkens toward the edge, so the dial reads black in most light, and dealers and collectors list it as a black dial.
How much does a black dial Patek Philippe cost?
At retail on patek.com, as of October 2026, the current black dial references in our inventory start at $24,632 for the Aquanaut Luce 5267/200A-001, with the Aquanaut 5167A-001 at $27,257 and the Calatrava 6007G at $44,387, and go up to $5,631,628 for the Grandmaster Chime 6300/403G-001. Prices for the pieces listed here, including pre-owned and discontinued references, are shown on each listing or available on request.
What is the difference between lacquered, opaline and enamel black dials?
They are different finishes. A lacquered dial, like the one on the Calatrava 5227G-010, is coated in layers of lacquer and polished to a deep gloss. Opaline is a fine-grained, slightly satiny finish; Patek calls its version ebony black opaline. Grand Feu enamel, used on the 6301P-001, is powdered glass fired onto the dial at high temperature, which gives it a depth that does not fade. Champlevé enamel, used on the 5738/51G-001, fills recesses engraved into the dial plate.
Which black dial Patek Philippe watches are discontinued?
Among the references on this page, patek.com lists the Calatrava 5227G-010, the perpetual calendar chronograph 5270/1R-001 and the Celestial 6102R-001 as discontinued. Older black dial models, such as the Nautilus 5980/1R-001 chronograph, also appear here when we have them.
