What “Selfwinding” Means on a Royal Oak

Selfwinding is Audemars Piguet’s house term for an automatic movement. A rotor turns with the motion of your wrist, winds the mainspring and keeps the watch running without you touching the crown. Rolex calls the same principle “Perpetual”; Audemars Piguet calls it Selfwinding, and prints the word on the dial of the models that carry it. The distinction matters when you shop, because “Royal Oak Selfwinding” is used two ways. Broadly, it covers every automatic Royal Oak — including the chronographs and the extra-thin pieces. Narrowly, collectors use it for the time-and-date Royal Oak with no extra complication: a clean “Tapisserie” dial, applied hour markers, a date at three o’clock and nothing else competing for attention. Both readings are represented here.

Royal Oak Selfwinding Sizes: 41 mm, 39 mm and 37 mm

Case size is the first decision, and it changes the watch more than the photographs suggest. The Royal Oak wears wide for its stated diameter because the bezel is octagonal and the lugs are integrated into the bracelet, so there is no overhang.
  • 41 mm — the contemporary flagship proportion and the size most people mean by “Royal Oak Selfwinding”. It suits wrists from roughly 6.75 inches upward and carries the chronograph variants comfortably.
  • 39 mm — the extra-thin territory. In this collection the 39 mm pieces are the slimmest, most dress-leaning Royal Oaks we hold, where case height matters more than diameter.
  • 37 mm — genuinely unisex, and the size that has moved furthest into demand over the last few years. It is the natural choice under a cuff and on wrists below about 6.5 inches.
Use the Case Size filter above to see only the diameter you want. If you are between two sizes, the 37 mm and 41 mm wear closer together than the numbers imply, because the Royal Oak’s bezel occupies so much of the dial opening.

The References, Explained

Audemars Piguet reference numbers look opaque but decode cleanly. The first five digits identify the model and generation; the two letters that follow give the case metal — ST for stainless steel, OR for 18k rose (pink) gold, BC for white gold, TI for titanium, SR for steel-and-rose-gold two-tone. The digits at the end identify the dial.
  • 15400 — the 41 mm Selfwinding that ran from 2012 to 2019, and the reference that brought the modern Royal Oak to a wide audience. Browse the Royal Oak 15400 collection.
  • 15500 — the 2019 successor, with a redrawn dial, a repositioned date window and a movement upgrade over the 15400.
  • 15510 — the current 41 mm Selfwinding, introduced for the collection’s 50th anniversary. This is the reference most searches for “Royal Oak Selfwinding” are looking for; see the full Royal Oak 15510 collection.
  • 15550 — the 37 mm Selfwinding, offered in steel and gold with the same dial treatments as its larger sibling. See the Royal Oak 15550 collection.
  • 26240 — the 41 mm Selfwinding Chronograph, with two subdials, a date at six o’clock and pushers flanking the crown.

Selfwinding, Chronograph or Extra-Thin?

Three Royal Oaks sit close enough together to be worth separating before you buy. The time-and-date Selfwinding is the purist’s Royal Oak. Nothing interrupts the “Tapisserie” grid except the hands, the markers and the date, and the case stays slim enough to disappear under a shirt cuff. It is the version that holds its shape as a daily watch. The Selfwinding Chronograph adds a stopwatch: two registers, a tachymeter-free bezel that keeps the Royal Oak silhouette intact, and pushers that thicken the case profile. It is a busier, more mechanical-looking watch on the wrist, and it is the largest group in this collection. Our full Royal Oak Chronograph collection covers every generation. The extra-thin and flying tourbillon pieces go the other direction, stripping height out of the case and, in the tourbillon’s case, putting the escapement on display at six o’clock. These are the collection’s statement watches rather than its everyday ones. If you want the louder, sportier interpretation with a larger case and more presence, look at the Royal Oak Offshore instead. For the full family, start at the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak hub.

Steel, Rose Gold and Titanium

Metal changes the Royal Oak’s character more than dial color does, because the case and bracelet are finished with alternating brushed surfaces and polished bevels that catch light differently in each material. Stainless steel is the original and still the hardest to source at retail; the alternating satin and polished finishing is at its most legible here. 18k rose gold turns the same design into a dress watch and adds substantial weight on the wrist — a full gold Royal Oak bracelet is noticeably heavier than the steel equivalent. Titanium does the opposite, dropping the weight sharply while giving the case a darker, more matte tone. Rose gold cases are also offered on leather straps, which soften the look and cost considerably less than the matching gold bracelet. Dial choice follows taste rather than value: blue is the signature and the most requested, black is the most discreet, grey reads differently in every light, and green appeared with the 50th-anniversary releases and remains the scarcest of the four.
