Almost every strap in this collection is one of three materials, and the difference is worth understanding before you choose.
Alligator is the dress-watch default and the reason most of these watches cost what they do. It is graded by the scale pattern cut from the hide: the square, even scales down the belly command the highest prices, while the rounder scales toward the flank are cheaper. Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Blancpain fit alligator as standard, and a factory replacement from those houses is rarely under a few hundred dollars. Because it is a CITES-regulated material, an alligator strap can complicate an international shipment — worth knowing if you are buying from abroad.
Calfskin is smoother, more uniform and considerably more forgiving. It takes a deep saturated blue better than alligator does, breaks in faster, and costs a fraction to replace. Cartier, TAG Heuer and much of the Breitling range here use it. If the watch is going to be worn several days a week rather than kept for occasions, calfskin is usually the more sensible material.
Suede and nubuck turn up on a handful of Panerai and Hublot pieces. They give the softest look and the most texture, and they are the least tolerant of rain and sweat of the three.
Which houses put blue leather on which watch
The collection is not evenly spread, and the concentrations tell you something about who takes blue leather seriously:

Getting the size right
Cases in this collection run from 32mm to 49mm, but the weight of it sits between 38mm and 44mm — 42mm and 41mm are the two most common sizes, with 44mm close behind. A 38mm or 39mm dress watch on a tapering alligator strap wears very differently from a 44mm Panerai on a thick suede one, so filter by case size before you filter by anything else.
Strap width is set by the lug width of the case, not by preference. Most dress watches here take 18mm, 20mm or 21mm at the lugs; Panerai runs 24mm or 26mm. If you plan to swap straps later, check the lug width first — a 20mm strap will not fit 21mm lugs, and Patek's 21mm and 22mm sizings are a common and expensive mistake. Note too that integrated-strap designs such as the Aquanaut are cut to that case alone and cannot take a generic strap at all.
Blue leather and case metal
Blue is unusually accommodating, but the pairings are not equal. Rose gold is the classic partner and the one most of the Patek and Audemars Piguet pieces here use — the warmth of the metal against a cool navy is the whole point of the combination. White gold and platinum give a colder, more formal result that suits a blue dial on the same watch. Steel is the most versatile and the least dressy, and it is where the Breitling, IWC and Cartier pieces sit. Yellow gold with blue is the boldest of the four and the rarest here.
Looking after it
A leather strap is a wear item, not a permanent part of the watch. Worn several days a week, expect one to two years before the fold at the buckle starts to crack; worn occasionally and kept dry, considerably longer. Three things shorten that life more than anything else: water, sweat and sunlight.
Do not swim or shower in a leather strap, whatever the case is rated to — the water resistance figure describes the case, not the strap. Let the strap dry fully between wears if you can, and rotate between two watches if you wear one daily. A deployant (folding) clasp costs more than a pin buckle but removes the repeated sharp fold that kills most straps, and it is worth fitting to anything you intend to keep.

A replacement strap is a separate cost worth budgeting for. A factory blue alligator strap from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet or Blancpain typically runs into the high hundreds; an equivalent from Cartier or TAG Heuer is a good deal less, and quality aftermarket alligator sits below both. If you buy one watch and wear it daily, assume you will replace the strap at least once in the first few years.

Is a blue leather strap harder to wear than black or brown?
No, though it is less neutral. Navy sits comfortably with grey, charcoal and white, and with denim; it fights slightly with brown shoes and with warm-toned tan. If the watch is intended as a one-watch collection, brown or black leather is the safer choice and blue is the more interesting one.
Can I wear a blue leather strap watch in water?
No. The water resistance rating on the case says nothing about the strap. Repeated wetting stiffens leather, breaks down the adhesive at the fold and causes the dye to run — and blue dye is more visible than black when it transfers to a cuff. Fit a rubber or steel bracelet for anything involving water.
How long does a blue leather strap last?
One to two years of frequent wear is typical before the crease at the buckle begins to crack, and longer for a watch worn occasionally. Heat and perspiration are the main accelerants, so a strap worn through a humid summer ages faster than the same strap worn in winter. A deployant clasp meaningfully extends that life.
What is the difference between alligator and crocodile straps?
They are different animals with visibly different hides. Alligator scales are larger, squarer and more regular through the belly, which is why it is the preferred material for high-end dress straps. Crocodile has a small pore or dot at the center of each scale, absent in alligator. Both are CITES-regulated. Most straps described as "crocodile" in the watch trade are in fact alligator.
Will the strap fit if I buy a different watch later?
Only if the lug widths match. Straps are sized to the case in millimeters — 18mm, 20mm, 21mm and 22mm are the common dress sizes here, and Panerai uses 24mm or 26mm. A 20mm strap will not fit 21mm lugs. Integrated-strap designs such as the Patek Philippe Aquanaut take only their own factory strap.
