Rolex Roman Numerals

Roman numerals are Rolex at its most formal — applied metal figures that turn the same Oyster case into a dress watch. They appear most often on the Datejust and the Day-Date President, and in 2026 Rolex redrew them for the first time in decades. Every Roman-dial piece we hold is listed below. Show more
Filter by case size, dial color, bracelet and condition to narrow the selection — or go straight to the Datejust Roman dials, the Day-Date Roman dials, or the green-on-slate Wimbledon.

Why Choose a Roman-Numeral Rolex

  • A dressier register. Roman markers read more formally than batons or diamond indexes, without changing the case or the bracelet.
  • Two fonts now exist. The serif numerals used until 2026 and the new sans-serif "deconstructed" set both circulate on the pre-owned market, so the dial you choose dates the watch.
  • The Wimbledon. Slate dial, green Romans — and the one Roman dial Rolex deliberately left untouched in the 2026 redesign.
  • Presidential heritage. Roman-dial Day-Dates have been a fixture of the President since the model's 1956 debut.
  • Dial breadth. Champagne, silver, slate, chocolate, aubergine, olive and mother-of-pearl, many with factory diamond markers or bezels.

Rolex Roman Dial Price

At Watch My Diamonds, Rolex Roman numeral dial watches range from $5,999 to $118,800 across 179 priced listings.

Steel Datejusts open the range and precious-metal Day-Date Presidents with diamond bezels close it. In practice the metal, the bracelet and whether the dial carries factory diamond markers move the price far more than the numerals themselves — a Roman dial and a baton dial in the same reference and condition usually trade close to each other. The Wimbledon is the exception, and holds a consistent premium over comparable stick-dial Datejusts.

The 2026 "Deconstructed" Roman Numerals

At Watches and Wonders 2026 Rolex redrew the Roman numeral dial across the Datejust 36 and Datejust 41, part of a release running to well over a hundred new references. The change is structural, not cosmetic. Each numeral used to be a single applied element with serifs. The new ones are built from separate pieces: the IIII is four individual batons, the VIII four distinct elements. The figures are flatter, sharper, sans-serif and noticeably thicker on the dial. New colorways arrived alongside them — white and black on the 41 mm, and black, olive, mint, aubergine, dark grey, pink and chocolate on the 36 mm, several with diamonds at six and nine o'clock. Two things follow for anyone buying now. The serif Roman dial is a closed design, so every pre-2026 example is a finite series. And the four-as-IIII convention survived intact — Rolex rebuilt the numeral, not the tradition.

Why Rolex Writes Four as IIII

Rolex prints IIII, not IV, and it is deliberate. The convention is far older than the brand: clockmakers have used it for centuries because IIII gives the lower-left of the dial enough visual weight to match the VIII sitting opposite it. Split a Roman dial into thirds and each third is built from a single repeated character — four I, four V, four X. Writing IV breaks that symmetry. The numerals also appear upside down past the six o'clock marker. They are not rotated to face the center of the dial; they are set along a curved baseline that follows the chapter ring, so the dial reads as one continuous band rather than twelve independently oriented markers. It is a decision about symmetry rather than legibility.

The Wimbledon Dial

The slate dial with green Roman numerals — named for Rolex's long association with the Championships — is the most requested Roman dial we sell. It runs on the Datejust 41 and the 36 mm, on Oyster and Jubilee bracelets, in steel and in steel with rose or yellow gold. It is also the one Roman-numeral dial Rolex did not touch in 2026: the Wimbledon keeps its classic serif figures while the rest of the Datejust range moved to the deconstructed font. Which Rolex Models Come With Roman Numerals

  • Datejust 36 and Datejust 41 — the core of the Roman-dial range, and the only two references to receive the 2026 deconstructed numerals. See every Datejust with Roman numerals.
  • Day-Date 36 and 40 — the President in yellow, white or Everose gold and platinum, usually with a fluted bezel. See every Day-Date with Roman numerals.
  • Lady-Datejust — 26 mm, 28 mm and 31 mm, frequently with mother-of-pearl dials and diamond markers.
  • Sky-Dweller — the one Rolex where the Roman numerals do a job: the rectangular aperture beside each numeral marks the month for the Saros annual calendar.
Roman numerals are not part of the current Oyster Perpetual or the professional sports range. Where you see them there, the dial is vintage or aftermarket, and we say so on the listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Rolex use IIII instead of IV on their dials?

Because IIII balances the dial. Known as the "clockmaker's four", the convention gives the lower-left of the dial enough visual weight to match the VIII opposite it, and it predates Rolex by centuries. The 2026 deconstructed numerals kept it.

Did Rolex change the Roman numerals in 2026?

Yes. At Watches and Wonders 2026 Rolex introduced "deconstructed" Roman numerals on the Datejust 36 and Datejust 41: sans-serif, flatter and thicker, with each numeral built from separate applied elements rather than one piece. The Wimbledon dial was excluded and keeps its serif numerals.

Which Rolex models are available with Roman numerals?

Mainly the Datejust 36, Datejust 41 and Lady-Datejust, and the Day-Date 36 and 40. The Sky-Dweller also uses Roman numerals, with a month aperture beside each one. Roman dials are not offered on the current Oyster Perpetual or the professional sports models.

What is the Rolex Wimbledon dial?

A slate grey dial with green Roman numerals, offered on the Datejust 41 and Datejust 36. It takes its nickname from Rolex's association with the Wimbledon Championships, and it is the only Roman-numeral Datejust dial Rolex did not redesign in 2026.

Why do Rolex watches have the Roman numerals upside down?

They are set along a curved baseline that follows the chapter ring rather than rotated to face the center of the dial, which makes them read as inverted past the six o'clock marker. The layout preserves symmetry across the dial as a whole.

Are Roman numeral Rolex watches worth more?

Not usually. A Roman dial and a baton dial in the same reference and condition tend to trade close to each other, with metal, bracelet and diamond markers mattering more. The Wimbledon is the clear exception and carries a premium.

"I’ve owned several Rolex watches, but the Datejust 41 ‘Wimbledon’ (ref. 126334) with its slate dial and green Roman numerals feels special. Thank you to the team at Watch My Diamonds for sourcing this beautiful watch for me."
