15450 vs 15550: Two Generations of the 37 mm
The 15550 replaced the 15450 in 2022, the year of the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary. The case is still 37 mm across, but almost everything around it changed: a new movement, a thinner case with slightly wider bevels along its edge, a more tapered and lighter bracelet, and a cleaner dial.
| 15450 | 15550 | |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Calibre 3120 | Calibre 5900 |
| Frequency | 3 Hz, 21,600 vibrations per hour | 4 Hz, 28,800 vibrations per hour |
| Power reserve | 60 hours | 60 hours |
| Jewels | 40 | 29 |
| Thickness in steel | 9.8 mm | 9.1 mm |
| Water resistance | 50 m | 50 m |
| Bracelet code | 1256 | 1356 |
| Dial | “AP” initials at 12 o’clock, “Automatic” at 6 o’clock | Both lines of text removed; the signature at 12 o’clock is applied gold |
What to Check Before Buying a Royal Oak 37 mm
- The full reference against the papers. Versions can differ only in the suffix, such as the grey and the light blue steel 15550, so check that the reference on the warranty card matches the watch.
- The generation. The dial tells you at a glance: the “AP” initials at 12 o’clock and “Automatic” at six mean the earlier 15450 family, with the calibre 3120.
- Factory diamonds. In the references above, ZZ marks a diamond-set watch, ZS diamonds with a sapphire-set bezel, GG the Frosted Gold finish and OO a plain watch. Diamonds on a watch whose papers say OO are a reason to ask questions.
- The finishing. The Royal Oak alternates brushed and polished surfaces on the case, bezel and bracelet. Heavy polishing softens those edges, so look for crisp lines between the two finishes, above all on the wider bevels of the 15550.
- Straps. The 15551 on an alligator strap closes with an 18-carat gold AP folding clasp set with diamonds; check that the clasp is present and matches the case metal.
- The warranty card. Audemars Piguet’s warranty runs five years for watches bought from its authorized network since January 1, 2017, so the purchase date on the card matters.
Every watch we sell is inspected and authenticated in house before it ships.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 37mm FAQs
What is the retail price of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 37 mm?
In the United States, the steel 15550 lists for $30,400 and the steel 15551 with a diamond bezel for $37,400, as of October 2026. In gold, the 15550 starts at $75,700, and the Double Balance Wheel Openworked runs from $102,400 to $113,600. The baguette-set 15551BC, the snow-set 15552 and the Flying Tourbillon are priced on request.
What is the difference between the Royal Oak 15450 and the 15550?
The 15550 replaced the 15450 in 2022. It uses the calibre 5900 at 4 Hz in place of the calibre 3120 at 3 Hz, its steel case is 9.1 mm thick instead of 9.8 mm, and its dial drops the AP initials and the word Automatic. Both have a 60-hour power reserve and are water-resistant to 50 m.
How thick is the Royal Oak 37 mm?
9.1 mm for the current 15550 in steel and most versions of the 15551; the earlier 15450 is 9.8 mm. The yellow gold 15550 with a turquoise dial is 9.3 mm, the Double Balance Wheel Openworked 10 mm and the Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin 8.1 mm.
What movement does the Royal Oak 37 mm use?
The current 15550 uses the calibre 5900, as does the diamond-bezel 15551: a self-winding Audemars Piguet movement with 29 jewels, a frequency of 4 Hz and a 60-hour power reserve, showing the hours, minutes, center seconds and date. The snow-set 15552 uses the calibre 5909, without the date. The earlier 15450 uses the calibre 3120.
Is the Royal Oak 37 mm a men’s or a women’s watch?
It is worn by both. At 37 mm it sits between the 34 mm, made for smaller wrists, and the 41 mm.
How water-resistant is the Royal Oak 37 mm?
50 m on most versions. The snow-set 15552 and the diamond-set Double Balance Wheel 15469 on a strap are water-resistant to 20 m.
