HISTORY OF IWC WATCHES

IWC founder Florentine Ariosto Jones, utilized the help of Swiss watchmakers, along with modern technology & hydropower derived from the River Rhine, to manufacture watch movements of the highest quality possible. Several years after its inception, the ownership of this factory was finally transferred into Swiss hands.

In 1880, Johannes Rauschenbach-Vogel purchased the company, and four generations owned and operated IWC under different names. Even with the transfer of ownership from generation to generation, the company stayed true to the philosophy of the product, “Probus Scafusia,” which means dedication to excellence.

MOST POPULAR IWC MODELS

The IWC (The International Watch Company) catalog is home to some of the most iconic timepieces in the world. Many of the company’s most successful collections have stayed in the industry for decades, and have helped define their respective categories of watches.

IWC AQUATIMER

The Aquatimer debuted in 1967 when Scuba diving was enjoying its heyday. IWC may have been late to the game, but with a 200m water resistance and a pioneering internal rotating bezel, it was able to stand out in an increasingly crowded space.

Construction for the Aquatimer varies between stainless steel & bronze casings. However, it still retains the inner bezel and operates it with an outer bezel ring rather than a second crown-like on excellent examples. Its prices range from between $4500 and $11,500.

IWC DA VINCI

Perhaps this watch did more than others to change the public’s perception towards IWC as it was one of the most revolutionary models ever made in this type. Before its introduction in 1985, these watches were considered as incredibly complex & fragile items, impressive in their functionality but sometimes expensive.

The Da Vinci was the brainchild of technical director Kurt Klaus. It was designed to be not only easy to use but also durable and simple to produce in volume. With a Valjoux 7750 movement for power, the calendar complications could be regulated with the crown only, as opposed to the series of pushers integrated into the case like on many other examples.

Within two years, IWC started building 2,000 pieces per annum, more than the rest of the Swiss industry put together. Thus, it became the most user-friendly and accessible-priced IWC watch ever.

IWC INGENIEUR

The Ingenieur debuted in 1955 and answered the problems faced by the world’s scientists & technicians (i.e., the destructive effects of their equipment’s high electromagnetic fields on IWC watches). And get this; it beat similar offerings from Omega and Rolex to the punch at that time.

Further, protecting the movement’s delicate components, including the new “Pellaton” winding system was necessary. For this, the mechanism was shrouded in a soft iron Faraday cage, providing enough protection to withstand magnetic forces up to 1,000 gausses, which is 16 times greater than what was required by Swiss regulations of the time.

In the 1970s, a radically different interpretation of the Ingenieur arrived when design duties were turned over to Gérald Genta, the man famously responsible for Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak & the Patek Philippe Nautilus. And with the integrated tonneau case & bracelet, topped by a round bezel secured by five visible screws, The IWC Ingenieur SL borrowed trademark elements from both.

With a traditional style, the initial two releases were civilian versions of the brand’s Mark XI pilot’s watch, which came with a different dial and handset. Although it had plenty of variety, it was cast in steel, with a combination of 14K gold and steel, and full 18k yellow gold. Now, the model has reverted to a more classic shape, and the current collection includes almost everything retailing around at $5,500.

IWC PORTUGIESER

Dating way back to 1939, IWC’s Portugieser collection is one of the marque’s longest-running series and also amongst the most recognizable. The original Portugieser watch (ref. IW325), satisfied the demand for a timepiece with the precision of a marine wristwatch. Interestingly, it was able to aid in ocean navigation for the Portuguese navy. It comes fitted with the Caliber 74 inside a large 43mm case. The Portugieser became the first wristwatch ever to be powered by a pocket watch movement.

Today, the Portugieser series of watches bridges the gap between being formal & sporty. The collection has many models ranging from flying tourbillon pieces, with power reserves and retrograde date displays, still wound by the Pellaton system up to elegant bi-compax chronographs that command prices in the neighborhood of $8,500.

Although it has been released with a variety of dial variations over the years, several key styling cues have remained consistent. A skinny bezel helps it to appear even more prominent. With large sub-dial at six o’clock, and Arabic numeral hour markers make for perfect readability, as well as the elongated ‘Feuilles de Sauge’ leaf hands, it can be an exciting part of your collection.

IWC PILOT’S WATCHES

IWC’s pilot’s watches have the most extensive range in the catalog by far and is divided into five distinct collections. The Classic series draws heavily on the vintage originators, but the range now comprises mainly of time & date models along with several chronographs, starting from $5,000.

At first glance, the Spitfire watches look very similar to the Classic, but they are powered exclusively by IWC’s movements and are housed in either steel or bronze cases. A comparable set of complications and a perpetual calendar piece rounding it out at the top end sums up the group entirely. Prices for the Spitfire collection more-or-less align with the Classic collection.

The Top Gun editions, introduced in 2007, were named after the legendary U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School. It started with the Double Chronograph, but the two previous ranges were decidedly retro. Further, the Top Guns are up with the modern time, with either ceramic cases or IWC’s blend of ceramic & titanium known as Ceratanium.
