ABOUT BREITLING WATCHES

Breitling was founded in Switzerland in 1884, and since then, it has become one of the leading Swiss watch manufacturers of high-end watches. Breitling is mainly recognized for its specialization in chronographs, dive watches, pilot watches, and other professional watches. And it comprises an impressive collection of famous models, including historical favorites like the Avenger, Navitimer, Chronomat, Colt & Superocean, along with newer models such as Aviator 8, Navitimer 8 as well as Premier.

Now, let’s delve into Breitling’s history for a little bit. In 1915, Breitling came at the forefront of the emergence of the wrist chronograph by inventing the first independent chronograph push-piece. And in 1923, Breitling further perfected this system by separating the stop/start functions from that of resetting.

Further, in 1969, the brand took on one of the greatest 20th-century watchmaking challenges and came out on top of the first self-winding chronograph movement. Importantly, in 1984, the brand heralded the rebirth of the mechanical chronograph by launching the famous Chronomat series, which is now its leading model.

Breitling makes both high-accuracy quartz watches and mechanical watches. And since 1999, all of their watch movements have been certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute ( ).

Recently, Breitling has started to focus on making many of its movements in-house. Whether for air, land, or sea, Breitling makes world-class luxury watches that combine style, durability & technical precision.

POPULAR BREITLING WATCH MODELS

Throughout its history of almost 130 years, Breitling has produced its fair share of notable watch designs. Below you’ll find more about Breitling’s most popular and historically important watch models, as well as some relatively new collections set to become modern classics.

BREITLING AVENGER WATCHES

Since its inception, Breitling’s Avenger range of watches remains a strong collection among the brand’s flagship models, like the Navitimer & Chronomat. The beloved diver chronograph possesses exceptional specs, including water resistance up to 300 meters. Also, there are subsets of the model that further showcase Breitling’s technical excellence.

BREITLING CHRONOMAT

Before talking about the Breitling Nativimer, we have to talk about the Breitling Chronomat - the source of inspiration for the Navitimer series of watches. In 1940, Breitling obtained a patent for the Chronomat watch, which featured a rotating slide rule to allow mathematicians & scientists to quickly calculate various measurements & mathematical equations such as conversions from one unit of measure to another, division, multiplication, and other calculations.

The name Chronomat was officially introduced in 1941. It is a combination of the words ‘Chronograph’ & ‘Mathematics.’ However, the Breitling Navitimer was the one that later made the rotating slide rule famous, and the Chronomat ventured down a different path since the 1980s.

BREITLING NAVITIMER

In 1952, Breitling came up with the now-iconic Navitimer pilot’s watch, which takes its name from combining the words ‘Navigation’ & ‘Timer.’ The Navitimer featured the circular slide rule introduced in the Chronomat, making it a particularly useful watch for pilots who need to perform calculations like fuel consumption, airspeed, distance, metric to standard conversions, etc.

Astronaut Scott Carpenter helped design a particular version of the Breitling Navitimer (Cosmonaute) with a 24-hour dial, which he wore during the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission way back in 1962.

BREITLING SUPEROCEAN & BREITLING SUPEROCEAN HERITAGE

Along with Rolex and Omega, Breitling also introduced dive watches in the 1950s. The Breitling Superocean debuted in 1957 and came with a choice of an automatic time-only model or a manual-wound chronograph version.

Along with the modern style Superocean watches, Breitling also came up with the Superocean Heritage lineup, which, as its name implies, has a vintage-inspired design. The Breitling Superocean Heritage collection includes models that take design cues from the very first Superocean models but with modern movements, larger cases, and other updated features.

BREITLING PREMIER

To complement the company’s range of professional chronographs and instruments, Breitling also debuted the Premier line of elegant and dressier chronographs in solid gold and steel in 1943. The collection was revived recently in 2018, and the modern-day Breitling Premier line features day-date models, time-only models, and chronographs, all designed with a touch of mid-century elegance.

BREITLING FOR BENTLEY

In 2002, Breitling designed the onboard clock for Bentley’s Continental GT, and in 2003, Breitling created a special-edition ‘Bentley Le Mans’ timepiece to celebrate Bentley’s win at the 2003 Le Mans. This paved the way for the ‘Breitling for Bentley’ partnership, and now, this is a separate brand of Breitling watches that takes its inspiration from luxurious Bentley cars like rotational bezels featuring the famed honeycomb radiator grille pattern or quilted leather straps mimicking the vehicles’ interior.

The Breitling for Bentley watches are chronographs, too, but they feature additional complications for frequent travelers such as world timer & GMT functionality.

BREITLING TRANSOCEAN WATCHES

Breitling introduced the first Transocean model in 1958. The collection followed in the footsteps of the brand’s iconic Navitimer series of watches and was designed by keeping international travelers in mind. Breitling Transocean models characterize themselves by understated elegance from the inside out with a vintage-inspired design. They also offer a refined aesthetic with clean lines as well as technological refinement. It captures the spirit of the golden age of transcontinental flights in the 1950s.
